Historic Homes of Batesville

The OIRM is excited to partner with Batesville Junior High School’s EAST Program on a special local history initiative.

As part of this collaboration, students have created a story map highlighting several historic homes along Main Street. Their work spans nearly a century of architecture and community history, beginning with the Garrott House, built in 1842, and continuing through the Walbert Cottage, erected in 1937.

This project showcases the rich heritage of Batesville along with the creativity and dedication of its students, bringing local history to life in an interactive and meaningful way for the community.

Civil War Veterans in Oaklawn Cemetery

The OIRM, the BJHS EAST Program, and museum supporter Alan Bufford have identified the burial sites of local Civil War veterans interred at Oaklawn Cemetery.

As part of this project, students have used drone technology to capture aerial photographs of the cemetery, providing a comprehensive visual overview of the grounds.

The museum has also transcribed Oaklawn Cemetery’s interment records and will make them available to the public soon.

Christmas at the Capitol (2025)

In 2025, the OIRM partnered with the Arkansas State Capitol to showcase historic toys from Christmases past in Independence County!
