April 1874 – April 1962
Oaklawn Cemetery Interment Records
Batesville, Arkansas
Transcription Information
This document was transcribed by Beverly Penn at the Old Independence Regional Museum (OIRM) from 2025 to 2026.
Records include relevant information such as family name, age, date of interment, ethnicity, residential status, plot location, plot owners and family relatives, and page number. On occasion, the records remark on how certain individuals died.
Efforts have been made to transcribe family names as accurately as possible; however, several names may have been misspelled within the interment records themselves. Other names are unknown or eligible. Human errors made during the transcription process is also possible due to the varying quality of the copied documents.
Certain individuals were distinguished with military designations after their death. Websites like findagrave.com often denote veterans with a “V,” but not all veterans are listed.
The legacies of African American slavery and segregation (“Jim Crow”) are unfortunately present in these interment records into the mid-20th century. The use of the archaic term “colored” as a marker remains in our transcription as in the original documents. Despite the negative association connected to the term, we sincerely hope that this document assists black genealogical research.
Sources of information used were copies of the original interment records from Oaklawn Cemetery, copies of Crouch Funeral Home records (both are available for research at the museum), and online resources such as findagrave.com.
