Fly Fishing Basket

We have had an exciting week at Old Independence Regional Museum. Mr. John Maddy has entrusted OIRM with his grandfather’s – and father’s – fly fishing gear. A few of the items in particular are more than unique, they are originals. Mr. Maddy’s grandfather, Jack (John) Maddy, created three of these baskets from scratch, bending the metal for the base and top, weaving the basket proper, and adding a clasp, handle (since destroyed by time) and strap for easy carrying.

Jack Maddy was not just an avid fisherman; this was his livelihood in the woods of Pennsylvania where he lived. His family survived on the game and fish he brought home. Jack wanted his boys to accompany him on his journeys and introduced them early to both hunting and fishing. This basket has “Roy” clearly pinpoint stamped on the lid with a beautiful pinpoint outline of fish jumping from the water. Roy is John’s father. The other two baskets of the three were for Roy’s brother and Jack made the third for himself.

Fly Fishing Pole

The workmanship on this pole rivals the basket’s. With precision lines and fittings, this three-part pole nestles one length into another with the wood of the pole clasped with a metal fitting which slides over the next smaller pole. Each segment is outfitted with eyelets for the line to run through and highly burnished with a rich, brown color and sealant. Depending on the water and type of fish, this pole offers three separate, easily transferred lengths. The pole is stored in its own soft-sided canvas case.

You will be able to enjoy both these objects soon as OIRM transforms its Depression-Era back porch to a fishing shack, showcasing local hobbies and livelihoods, such as fishing, shelling, button making, and pearling. Stay tuned for more exciting details!
