October 14 is World Sight Day! Wearable eyeglasses were invented in the 13th century. By the time this photo was made, bifocal and trifocal lenses were available as well as lenses to correct astigmatism.
Pictured is Mrs. R.T. Herring, born circa 1841, mother of Harry Herring. In this photo, she was perhaps in her late 70s, wearing a black dress with a feather collar and eyeglasses. (OIRM, Beaumont, Suzanne collection)
