Alan Bufford worked his magic on another stunning addition to Old Independence Regional Museum’s archive with this 1957 wedding dress worn by Frances Bradford upon her wedding to John A. Burks on August 11, 1957. The fitted lace bodice has dropped capped shoulders, and the full, white silk skirt is covered with a fine netting with horizontal rows of bunched fabric.

Alan spoke at length to Ms. Frances (see picture) as she explained in detail each of the items she placed in the museum’s care.

After thoroughly hand-cleaning the gown, Alan brought it back to the museum and inspiration struck – might he be able to find a news article showcasing Ms. Frances in this dress? Learning how to use the microfiche machine again proved fruitful. Alan discovered a photo of Ms. Frances replete in her gown, holding her bridal bouquet as she sat demurely on an elegant recamier.

This beautiful wedding dress has inspired museum staff into the possibility of showcasing wedding gowns next year in late spring. Stay tuned!
