Here is a collection of photos in celebration of National Dog Day! Take a look at these images of man’s (and woman’s) best friend through the years.
Photo 1: Sam Earnheart home in Bethesda. Sam worked in the distilling business with his father Robert in O’Neal, near Bethesda. House is two-storied with jutting 2-story front porch over the middle of the front. Stone wall across the front yard also holds an iron fence along its top. Three men (with dog) and two women with child stand in front of the home. (OIRM, McClure, Carolyn collection)
Photo 2: Frank Padgett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Padget, and dog. Early photo–probably late 1800’s. (OIRM, Young, Betty Umstead collection)
Photo 3: Unknown man and woman with dogs on stairs of wooden house and picket gate. He may have been associated with the construction of the locks and dams on White River, ca 1900s.
Fred Kealer, lock master at Lock 1 at Batesville on the White River, may have taken this photo. (OIRM, Dozier, Danny collection)
Photo 4: Photo of Alma June Cornelius (Armstrong) as an infant with her dog in Fulton County. Alma June is 8 months old. (OIRM, Armstrong, June collection)
