Photo 1: This is a photocopy of a photo featuring James P. and Rachel Allen taken ca 1860’s.  Rachel is wearing a bonnet (as seen in next photo.  James was born May 3, 1815 and died June 24, 1904.  He was the son of John R. and Elizabeth Allen.  James P. and Rachel built a house south of the White River in Independence County sometime before the Civil War.  Both Union and Confederate armies used their house for headquarters.  (OIRM, Helen Reves collection)

Photo 2:

This black cotton dress bonnet with a ruffle around the opening belonged to Rachel Allen, wife of James P. Allen ca. 1860’s.  The bonnet is lined but is missing its chin strap. (OIRM, Helen Reves collection)
