U.S. flag Spanish American War, 1898
U.S. flag Spanish American War, 1898

This U.S. flag was originally the property of Col. V. Y. Cook when he commanded the 2nd Arkansas Infantry Volunteers during the Spanish American War, 1898.  It is made of wool and has a gold colored fringe border.  The field contains 45 stars and bears the legend “2nd Ark. Inf. Vol.” appliqued on one red stripe. The regiment was mustered in c. 20 May 1898 and remained on active duty until 25 October 1899, when it was mustered out.  This is the only period that the flag would have been used.  It was used in Camp Dodge, Little Rock, Arkansas; Chickamauga Park, Georgia; Camp Shipp, Anniston, Alabama; Fort Logan H. Roots, Little Rock.  (OIRM, Grammer, William collection)
